Look over accessible vacuum hoses and the PCV hose for cracking, collapse, or disconnection. In South Florida heat, rubber and plastic components can become brittle over time. Also inspect battery terminals for corrosion or looseness. Low system voltage can affect ignition performance and electronic throttle or idle control systems.

If the engine has an accessible air filter, check whether it is severely dirty, wet, or improperly installed. A clogged air filter is not the most common cause of a serious rough idle by itself, but restricted airflow and an intake leak can contribute to poor performance.

Listen and Look for Patterns

Start the vehicle and listen from a safe distance. A steady hiss can suggest a vacuum leak. A sharp ticking sound may be an exhaust leak or valvetrain issue. A rhythmic stumble from the exhaust often accompanies a misfire.

Watch the tachometer if your vehicle has one. Most warmed-up gasoline engines idle in a relatively steady range, commonly around 600 to 900 RPM, though the exact specification depends on the vehicle. RPM that repeatedly rises and falls can point to an airflow, throttle body, idle control, or fuel mixture problem. A steady RPM with strong vibration may instead indicate worn engine mounts or a cylinder performance issue.

Pay attention to whether electrical loads affect the symptom. Turning on the A/C, headlights, rear defroster, or blower motor adds work for the engine and charging system. A healthy engine management system should compensate. If idle drops sharply or the vehicle nearly stalls, the underlying issue deserves a proper inspection.

Common Causes of a Rough Idle

Ignition problems are high on the list, especially on vehicles due for spark plugs. Worn spark plugs, failing ignition coils, damaged coil boots, and poor electrical connections can cause one or more cylinders to misfire. Many modern vehicles use coil-on-plug ignition systems, so a single weak coil can create a noticeable shake without making the engine completely unable to run.

Airflow problems are another common cause. Carbon buildup around the throttle body can interfere with airflow at idle, particularly on higher-mileage vehicles. A vacuum leak, intake gasket leak, stuck PCV valve, or dirty mass airflow sensor can also cause the engine to run too lean or unevenly. The right repair depends on testing. Cleaning parts or spraying chemicals at random can create new problems on sensitive electronic systems.

Fuel delivery concerns can include a restricted injector, weak fuel pump, contaminated fuel, or a problem with fuel pressure regulation. A clogged injector may affect only one cylinder, while low fuel pressure can affect the engine more broadly. Fuel-related issues often come with hesitation under acceleration, hard starting, or reduced power, but not always.

Some rough idles are caused by sensors or control systems. The engine computer relies on data from oxygen sensors, coolant temperature sensors, crankshaft and camshaft sensors, throttle position inputs, and airflow sensors. A faulty reading can lead the computer to deliver the wrong amount of fuel or air. Professional testing can compare live sensor data against expected values instead of replacing components based on guesswork.

Finally, do not overlook mechanical causes. Low compression, a timing issue, internal engine wear, or a leaking head gasket can produce a persistent misfire or uneven idle. These are less likely than maintenance-related causes in many vehicles, but they require timely attention when symptoms are severe or accompanied by overheating, coolant loss, oil consumption, or white exhaust smoke.
